Helping a loved one without taking over their account

To help a loved one with a health app, stay beside them while they do the steps. Let them type in their own password.

Do:

  • Ask their permission before looking at their data.

  • Use the sharing features the app provides, when they exist (caregiver access, report sharing).

  • Let them decide what they keep, share or erase.

Avoid:

  • Signing in on their behalf, with their username.

  • Keeping their passwords in your phone.

If the app has no sharing feature: your loved one can export a report as a PDF (in the app’s settings: « Export » or « Share ») and send it to you by email.

Limitation: if your loved one can no longer decide for themselves, a legal document can give you that right. In Quebec, it is the protection mandate: a notary or a lawyer can explain it.

To picture it: helping is holding a hand, not taking a place.
