A privacy policy is the text in which an app’s publisher explains what it does with your information. It is often long. A few keywords help you find the important passages, but they do not replace a full reading.
Open the policy: the link is at the bottom of the app’s listing in the store (App Store or Google Play), or in the app’s settings, under « Privacy » or « Legal ».
Open the search within the page: Share > Find on Page (iPhone), or the ⋮ menu > Find in page (Android).
Search for these words, then read the whole paragraph around each one:
« shar », « third part », « partners »: who your information is shared with;
« sell »: whether it can be sold;
« retain », « keep »: how long it is held;
« delete »: how to ask for it to be erased;
« Canada », « country »: where it is held.
You should see each word highlighted in the text.
If you don’t see it: a missing word does not prove the practice does not exist. The text may use other words, such as « transfer » or « disclose ». An app with no privacy policy at all is a warning sign.
Limitation: these keywords give you a first impression, not a full analysis. Only the complete policy governs, and it can change after you install the app. For a question about your rights, the Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec or the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada can advise you.
To picture it: keywords work like the index of a book: they tell you where to look, but you still have to read the page.
If in doubt: write to the publisher, at the address given in the policy, before entering health information into the app.
